Milestones. The year 2018 marked important milestones for Hokyoji: the 40th anniversary of Hokyoji’s founding in 1978 by Katagiri Roshi, and beginning the construction of new facilities Mauss Hall and the Guest Hall. To these milestones will be added the Mountain Seat Ceremony for Dokai Ron Georgesen on Saturday, June 6, 2020. On this date Rev. Dokai Georgesen will be officially installed as Hokyoji’s Guiding Teacher. On the same day, the new Hokyoji buildings will also be dedicated. This is a free event.
Dokai Georgesen, Guiding Teacher. Dokai Georgesen began his study of Zen Buddhism at Minnesota Zen Meditation Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, under the direction of Dainin Katagiri Roshi in 1974. In 1989 he received Dharma Transmission from Katagiri Roshi. He has made several trips to Japan for study. He has also had the opportunity to study under the direction of Thich Nhat Hanh. Dokai Georgesen has been residing at Hokyoji since June 2003 and was invited in 2007 to become the Resident Teacher at Hokyoji.
Daigaku Rumme. Hokyoji is grateful to have the presence of Daigaku Rumme as the officiant for dedication of Mauss Hall and the Guest Hall. Daigaku Rumme is Resident Teacher at Confluence Zen Center, St. Louis, Missouri.
Mauss Hall and Guest Hall. The new facilities at Hokyoji follow a successful capital campaign to erect new dining/meeting room, and housing facilities. The dining and kitchen hall will be given the name of Mauss Hall, in recognition of the work of Frank Mauss (long-time Hokyoji practitioner) and his entire family who gave generously of their time and labor so that the new facilities could become a reality. The HZPC Board of Directors extends its gratitude to these persons for their hard work and lasting contributions. The Guest Hall has sleeping accommodations that can house up to 15 people.
